Starting in 2022, ILSA-Intermodalidad will be the largest privately owned passenger rail operator in the Spanish market, bringing an end to the monopoly of the state-owned incumbent and ushering in the new era of competition in Spanish passenger rail. Its trains will serve the entire high speed rail network in Spain connecting Madrid with Barcelona (one of the busiest high speed routes in Europe with more than 7 million passengers per year), Zaragoza, Málaga, Sevilla and Valencia and Alicante - using a brand new fleet of 23 Hitachi/Bombardier high speed trainsets. Just like it has been in other parts of Europe, ILSA expects that competition on the tracks will bring about better quality, reduced fares, new jobs, greater efficiency and modal shift to rail, which will be great news for the environment.
