18th July 2023: In a remarkable display of solidarity, the transport sector has once again stepped up to support Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against the Russian onslaught. The international rail and bus operator Go-Ahead Group generously donated two buses from subsidiary companies in Swindon and Luton that have been refitted by Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP), a dedicated group of local volunteers, to serve as hospital buses in Ukraine.
These buses, specially adapted for medical purposes, have undergone extensive modifications to accommodate the urgent healthcare needs on the frontline. Seats have been removed to make way for three beds, along with facilities for heart monitors and drips. Additionally, the buses are equipped with a fresh water tank, bathroom facilities, and a portable generator.
Back in May 2023, one of the converted buses was officially handed over to the Ukrainian Ambassador outside the UK parliament in London, with the presence of numerous senior parliamentarians. Following the handover, the buses have embarked on their journey to the frontline. They successfully crossed the English Channel this month with free passage donated by the tunnel rail operator LeShuttle.
This inspiring act of humanity in action serves as a powerful testament to the commitment and compassion of the transport sector. The refitted buses will undoubtedly save lives and provide essential medical care to those affected by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
SHAP Chair Mike Bowden would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to discuss how they might be able to help our Ukrainian friends:
