Rail Reform is Global – Sharing what works

ALLRAIL’s Policy Director, John Thomas, attended a panel discussion at the National Transport Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, this week.

John joined a high-level discussion on “Enablers of successful reforms – the good, the bad, the ugly”, sharing European experience on economic regulation and market opening.

The message is clear – rail reform is happening worldwide and the fundamentals are the same:

➣ Competition drives efficiency
➣ Independent regulation builds trust
➣ Clear rules unlock private investment

The panel included:

John Thomas, Policy Director at ALLRAIL
Dr Andrew Shaw, Chief Strategy and Planning Officer at Transnet SOC Ltd
Brian Monakali, CEO at the South African Railway Safety Regulator
Assunta Luisa Perroti, Head of European and International Affairs at the Italian Transport Regulatory Authority
Howard Rosen CBE, Chairman of the Rail Working Group

A valuable exchange on how to deliver better rail for passengers and taxpayers alike
